We are excited to share the incredible submissions from our talented BMMS students for this year’s Reflections Program! Each entry reflects the theme “Accepting Imperfection”, and we are proud to showcase their creativity and artistic vision.
Below, you’ll find each submission organized by category, along with the students’ Artist Statements and their inspiring works.
Visual Arts
Jillian Tognetti (Grade 7): Perfect Me
- "My artwork represents me and my body wrapping myself around imperfection. I leave a gap for the imperfection to escape at any time but I chose for it to stay because my imperfection makes me who I am. And I wouldn't change a thing about me. It also represents me embracing imperfection and giving it a big hug of joy and happiness."
Emily Drake (Grade 7): Love Yourself
- "My work relates to the theme Accepting Imperfections because sometimes when you make a mistake it can be hard to love yourself and accept that you are not perfect. It's ok to not be perfect."
Katelyn Drake (Grade 8): Using Imperfections to Heal
- "Flaws can seem to bind and consume us. We often stop fighting and let them define us. But, no matter how imperfect we are, every single one of us is beautiful. Accepting imperfection is about using our flaws to strengthen our beauty instead of letting them tear us down. Once we are able to see our beauty through our imperfections, and in turn, use our imperfections to heal, we can truly be happy. My picture is of a person using their reflection to find the beauty in themselves despite their imperfections and using that beauty to heal."
Literature
Sadie Petersen (Grade 6): Imperfections
- My work is a poem about how imperfections are beautiful. It relates to the theme because acceptance starts with believing you are beautiful just the way you are.
Film Production
Leilah DeJoy (Grade 6): Perfectly Imperfect
- "My entry relates to the theme "Accepting Imperfections" because I am like the out-of-place duck, as I also have feet issues that will never stop bothering me. I have extra bones in both of my feet which go beyond discomfort and cause me pain at times. Unlike the duck, my extra bones don’t provide me with any benefits. Instead, aches and pain are problems I endure and strive to overcome. I accept my imperfect feet as I develop and improve other skills to outfox my opponents, training past setbacks, working around issues to be my best at fencing tournaments."
Music Composition
Gwen Narvasa (Grade 7): Shadows to Stardust
- "Music is a metaphor for life and so-called imperfections lead to innovation. Chopin-inspired "Finding Stars" symbolizes the journey of accepting imperfections, beginning with sorrow and rising to D major with how imperfections are a part of us, and least of all, imperfect. The second piece explores opening your "Infinite Horizons," encourages embracing flaws to break self-set barriers, ending unresolved to signify limitless possibilities. The final piece uplifts with a major key, representing sharing the journey of "Finding Stars", opening up "Infinite Horizons" and reaching "Peaceful Peaks". Everyone can find their own path to success by reframing their mindset of imperfections."
